According to recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, more than 50,000 men had liposuction last year alone. In this post, the team at Allure Plastic Surgery in Miami answers some frequently asked questions that male patients have had about this popular body contouring procedure.
How is Liposuction Different for Men?
Generally speaking, liposuction for men is the same as the procedure performed on women. However, male patients often differ from female patients when it comes to which “problem areas” they want addressed through the procedure. For example, a woman may want to remove excess fat around the hips and thighs (or “saddle bags”), whereas a man may instead want extra fat removed from his chest. Men often have liposuction to remove extra fat deposits from their chin, neck, stomach, chest, back and thighs.
Can Liposuction Fix a “Beer Belly”? How about “Man Boobs”?
Liposuction is meant to remove subcutaneous fat (residing just below the skin surface) and is not considered a good treatment for visceral fat (located below the muscle layer of the abdomen). A “beer belly” is made up of visceral fat, and as such, it surrounds the vital organs. For this type of fat, we recommend losing weight with diet and exercise.
“Man boobs,” or puffy, feminine-looking male breasts, are often the cause of gynecomastia, or enlarged breast tissue. Liposuction is often used as part of the male breast reduction procedure to remove excess fat from a man’s chest; this is performed through a small incision in the areola (the dark-colored skin surrounding the nipple).
After Liposuction, When Can I Return to Work and Exercising?
The length of your recovery period after liposuction will largely depend on the number of areas you’ve had treated and the extent of that treatment. Most of our liposuction patients, male or female, are able to return to work after one week and exercise after two to three weeks.
Will My Results Be Permanent?
Since liposuction removes fat cells from the body, they cannot rejuvenate (and therefore cannot accumulate fat) in the area that was treated. This does not mean, however, that weight gain will not affect the body; any weight gained after having liposuction will just be more evenly dispersed throughout the body. For optimal liposuction results, we recommend maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen after treatment.
