Botox is a very popular nonsurgical method for reducing frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet around the eyes and visible bands or cords in the neck. This is a less invasive, albeit temporary, alternative to a facelift for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles for restoring a youthful appearance to your face.
How Does Botox Work?
Wrinkles are caused by contractions of certain muscles for facial expression. Botox is injected into these muscles to relax them so that they can’t contract, relaxing the resulting wrinkles and creating an all-around smoother look to the area. A Botox injection is targeted to the specific wrinkle-causing muscles injected and does not have any impact on the surrounding muscles. The result is a face that looks years younger, smoother in appearance and natural-looking.
Are You a Good Candidate for Botox?
Botox is an effective treatment for both men and women who:
- Are between 18 and 65 years old
- Have “11” lines between the eyebrows
- Have forehead creases
- Have crow’s feet
- Have “marionette” lines from the outside of the nose to the corners of the mouth
- Have fine lines or wrinkles on the face or neck
What to Expect from a Botox Treatment
A Botox injection treatment is usually performed during a routine office visit that only takes 15 minutes or less, which is why it is often called a “lunchtime procedure.” Generally, no anesthesia is used for Botox, as it is a virtually painless procedure, however your surgeon may numb the injection area with an anesthetic cream. During the treatment, a fine needled is used to inject the Botox into the facial muscles that contract to create the wrinkles or lines that are being treated.
What to Expect After a Botox Treatment
There is no downtime associated with Botox injections, and you can return to work and other normal daily activities immediately. However, strenuous activity should be avoided for the remainder of the day after treatment. Avoid lying down for the first three to four hours following treatment, and touching the injection areas the day of the treatment. There will be some redness and swelling in the treatment area for the first day or two. Some slight bruising may also occur, but will dissipate in less than a week.
You can begin to see results as early as two days after the injections but improvement may continue for about the first week. The average length of the results is four to six months although in some cases the effects may last longer.
