Breast Augmentation – Be Happy with Your Sexier and Fuller Breasts Again…Or for the First Time!
A breast size that is in proportion to a woman’s body can enhance her self-confidence and improve her body image while also increasing her fashion choices. For these and other reasons, it is not surprising that breast augmentation is currently the number one cosmetic surgical procedure performed by plastic surgeons in Miami.
Breast augmentation enhances and improves the shape of a woman’s breasts through the surgical placement of breast implants. It can also be used to correct congenital breast asymmetries, a condition in which women may develop one breast larger than the other, making it difficult to wear certain clothing styles. And for women who want to restore the fullness and firmness lost during pregnancy or weight loss, breast augmentation surgery is a great option.
Our board-certified plastic surgeons have performed thousands of breast augmentation surgeries over the years and are well versed in all the different techniques and implants currently used for breast augmentation.
Finding Out if You are a Candidate
If you are considering having breast augmentation, you will first participate in a thorough pre-operative evaluation to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the surgery. If you are determined to be a good candidate, you will then participate in a detailed “question and answer session” with one of our surgeons with the purpose of determining your wishes and developing a plan that will achieve your goals for the surgery.
Aside from the personalized evaluation, there are some general guidelines for determining a good candidate for breast augmentation:
• Is dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts
• Wants to lift and add volume to sagging breasts
• Wants to fix breasts that are asymmetrical (one larger than the other)
• Has breasts that have finished developing
• Is in good general health

The Types of Breast Implants Available
There are different types of breast implants available and during the consultation process we will discuss which ones are better suited to your needs. Saline breast implants are empty when implanted and then filled with sterile salt water once in position. These implants require a smaller incision than silicone implants, resulting in a smaller scar. Saline implants are available to women who are 18 and older. Silicone breast implants are filled with thick silicone gel and are placed pre-filled inside the body. Many women choose silicone implants because they feel that they look and feel more like real breasts. Silicone implants are available to women ages 22 and older.
Implant Incision Points
The incision point is the place on your body through which the implant will be placed. The placement of the incision will vary depending on the patient’s anatomy, preference and type of implant used. The type of incision used does not affect the final result as far as size or shape of the breast. Each type of incision point comes with factors to consider; during your consultation you can discuss with your doctor which incision point would fit your specific needs.
During the breast augmentation procedure, the surgeons at Allure Plastic Surgery Miami use incisions in one of three areas: periareolar (through the dark border around the nipple), inframammary (in the breast fold) or transaxillary (through the armpit).
The periareolar incision creates a scar that is easily camouflaged by the areola, the dark-colored area around the nipple. Patients who are considering this incision point and who are planning to have children should consult with their doctor first, as implants placed through this method could cause difficulties breastfeeding.
The inframammary incision scar is also easily hidden by the breast fold underneath the breasts and also by clothing. And because the breast glands are not cut with this incision option, it results in no breastfeeding complications.
The transaxillary incision point is under the arm, in the armpit area. This incision point is ideal for the placement of saline implants, as it is the perfect point from which the implants can be filled once they are placed in the body. The transaxillary incision scar is also in an easily concealed place, in the fold underneath the arm.
Implant Placement Options
The surgeons place breast implants either under the pectoral muscle (subglandular) or over it (subpectoral). The decision as to where to place the implant will be based on factors such as your breast tissue, body composition and the amount of sagging (ptosis) of your breasts.
Subglandular placement, where the implant is placed between your chest muscle and breast tissue, will cause less discomfort and a shorter recovery time than over-the-muscle placement. However, it may be easier to see and feel the implant through the skin with this placement.
Subpectoral placement places the implant partially or completely under the pectoral muscle, and reduces rippling as well as the risk of capsular contracture (a complication of breast augmentation surgery in which the capsule that the body forms around the implant hardens).
Details of the Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation surgery is typically an outpatient procedure that takes between one to two hours to complete and is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. The operation begins with a small incision in the inferior crease of the breast, the armpit or the border of the areola. The space for the implant is created either under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle (pectoralis major muscle). The chosen implant is usually placed with its center lined up behind the nipple to enhance the natural shape of the breast. Finally, a fine plastic closure of the incision is performed. A surgical bra or bandages will be placed over the breasts in order to support them and protect incision points from infection during recovery.
What to Expect While Recovering
You will experience mild to moderate discomfort immediately following the procedure, and can use pain medication prescribed by your doctor during this time. There will also be some swelling or bruising, which should subside after one or two weeks. You may also have drainage tubes placed by your surgeon for the removal of excess fluids while you are healing. Your doctor will give you information on how to empty these tubes while you are recovering, and he will remove them within a few days or a week after the procedure. Sleep on your back with your upper body elevated in order to reduce swelling and discomfort. You should refrain from lifting anything for the first two weeks, and heavy lifting for four weeks after surgery. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities about a week after surgery.
