Laser hair removal has been proven an effective means of removing unwanted hair from the face, upper lip, underarms, bikini line, legs, neck, back, abdomen and breasts. Compared to the results of shaving or waxing, the smooth, hairless results of laser hair removal are more long term. In addition to removing hair, this treatment also reduces hair regrowth in that area. Most patients will need to undergo repeat treatments since hair grows in cycles and the laser only targets the hair in the actively growing cycle.
Good Candidates for Laser Hair Removal
Though people of all skin and hair colors may be considered good candidates for laser hair removal, the best candidates are people who:
- Are in good health
- Have unwanted hair on the face (except eye area) or body
- Have dark, course hair in the treatment area
- Are not taking prescription medications that cause photosensitivity
- Do not have suntanned skin at the time of treatment
- Do not have moles or tattoos in the treatment area
- Are not pregnant
What to Expect from a Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Laser hair removal is performed in our office with minimal discomfort and virtually no downtime. The treatment typically takes 30 minutes or less, though on larger treatment areas it may take up to a few hours. Protective eye shields are placed over the patient’s eyes to prevent eye injury from the laser. The hair in the treatment area will be trimmed, if necessary, and then a cold gel will be applied to the area to aid the laser light in penetrating the skin. The laser will be adjusted based on the hair and skin color and the amount of hair being removed. The cosmetic surgeon will then use the hand-held laser device to direct laser light pulses to the treatment area to damage the hair follicles and remove the hair from that area. Most patients report feeling only a cold sensation, and little to no discomfort, during treatment.
After a Laser Hair Removal Treatment
There is no downtime after treatment. Immediately afterwards, there may be some redness and swelling in the area (comparable to a sunburn), but it will typically disappear after a few hours. Use cold compresses and moisturizers to soothe the skin. When exposed to the sun, wear a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF on the treatment areas.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Though results vary from patient to patient, it typically takes six to eight treatments spaced out six weeks apart to achieve permanent hair loss in the treatment area. The length of time between each treatment will get longer since the hair will grow back at a slower rate, and there will be less hair to remove during each treatment until the hair loss is complete and permanent.
