Liposuction is a fat removal procedure that eliminates fat from areas of the body such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, flanks, back, anterior neck, arms and breasts. These areas are often characterized as “problem areas” because fat pockets tend to remain despite a person being at or near an ideal weight for his or her build and following healthy lifestyle habits including a healthy diet and regular exercise. Both women and men can benefit from the smoothing, slimming effects of liposuction.
Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) with the VASER® System
Allure Plastic Surgery offers Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL, a technique that uses the VASER® ultrasound device to deliver ultrasound waves that liquefy the fat before it is suctioned out of the body. The VASER® system allows the surgeon to safely remove more fat; results in less blood loss during the surgery; and causes less postoperative swelling and bruising compared with other liposuction techniques.

Are You a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
To adequately determine a person’s candidacy for liposuction, or any other plastic surgery procedure, it is important to have a patient consultation that will include consideration of the patient’s medical history and a physical exam. The following are some general characteristics that make a person a good candidate for this procedure.
- Is in good general health
- Is within a healthy weight range for build
- Is at a stable weight for several months
- Has firm, elastic skin
- Has fat bulges on the body despite proper diet and exercise habits
- Is not pregnant or lactating
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is usually performed as an outpatient procedure but it may require an overnight hospital stay when very large volumes of fat are removed during the surgery. The surgeon will recommend the best method of anesthesia which may be a local anesthetic, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia used depends on the individual patient (age and health status) and the volume of fat to be removed.
Prior to surgery the areas to undergo liposuction are marked on the patient as a guide map. Fluids are injected into the areas that will undergo the liposuction and then a cannula (slim hollow tube) is inserted through a very small incision near the areas to be contoured. The cannula is moved through the different layers of tissue to extract the excess fat. A specially designed ultrasound probe is inserted into the area to be reshaped through the same small incision used for the liposuction. The ultrasound energy liquefies the fat prior to removal. Once the fat removal is completed, a small stich may be used to close the incision.
Recovering from Liposuction
After surgery, your surgeon will place you in a compression garment to alleviate swelling and bruising. You will wear this garment for several weeks, and your surgeon will give you instructions for bathing. It is common to experience mild to moderate discomfort for the first few days after surgery, and your surgeon will prescribe you pain medication for this time in order to help you be comfortable.
It is recommended that you start walking around beginning the first day after surgery, as this will assist in blood circulation throughout the body, which will further help the swelling. Most liposuction patients are able to return to more sedentary jobs (like office work) after five to seven days, and light exercise after two weeks.
The results of the surgery will start to reveal themselves gradually; although you will notice an improved body shape almost immediately, the full results won’t be seen until six months after surgery.
Is liposuction weight loss surgery?
No. Liposuction is used to remove fat deposits from the body that don’t respond to consistently good diet and exercise habits. It is not used for the treatment of obesity or to remove excess weight; people who are 30 or more pounds overweight should follow a healthy plan to lose the weight. If, after losing weight, they wish to have liposuction to remove problem areas of fat that remain on their body, they should do so only after they have maintained a healthy and stable weight for several months.
Will the results of liposuction last?
The results of liposuction are permanent, due to the fact that the fat cells have been removed from the treated areas. Having liposuction does not, however, mean that you cannot gain weight in the future, though any weight that is gained will be more evenly distributed to the overall body contour rather than returning as fat deposits to the areas treated with liposuction.
Is liposuction painful?
No. The treatment areas will be injected with a local anesthetic so that they are numbed during the procedure. In addition to this, you will either be given additional local anesthesia or placed under general anesthesia (a decision that you will discuss with the surgeon before the procedure) to alleviate any pain. And since the UAL technique requires smaller incisions, there is even less discomfort.
Is liposuction safe?
Like any surgical procedure, liposuction has the potential for complications. The risk of complications is significantly reduced when a board-certified plastic surgeon, like those practicing at Allure Plastic Surgery, with years of experience performing liposuction administers the treatment. And the UAL technique’s use of sound waves prevents blood vessels and tissue from being damaged, which also results in less blood loss during surgery.
Does liposuction leave scars?
Yes, traditional liposuction techniques leave small incision scars (under 3mm) and the UAL technique used at Allure Plastic Surgery leaves scars even smaller. And since the surgeon makes incisions that are in less noticeable places (such as natural skin folds and in the belly button) the resulting scars will be less noticeable.
Does liposuction treat cellulite?
Liposuction can help to smooth out and reduce the appearance of cellulite to some degree, but it is not an effective treatment for cellulite.
What are the benefits of using ultrasound waves for liposuction treatment?
The ultrasound waves used in the UAL liposuction technique more effectively break up and emulsify fat so that a larger amount can be removed with less blood loss than traditional liposuction. The UAL technique is also effective on more fibrous parts of the body, such as male breast tissue. And there is less swelling and bruising with a UAL liposuction treatment when compared with traditional liposuction, which means less downtime and recovery.
